Although the heat index was in the
hundreds and the calendar said August 6, the Peacemaker’s Quilt show
featured a display of Christmas quilts and wall hangings.
Christmas
trees trimmed with quilted ornaments and sewing notions brightened the
Linn
Memorial
United
Methodist
Church
sanctuary at the show which started at 9 and continued until 3 p.m. this
Saturday. Procceds from the show,
raffle and marketplace totaling over $1000 will go to the Fayette
Ministerial Alliance Food Pantry.
Two other special
exhibits at this year’s show were quilts from the Quilts of Valor
program and a display of five of the Johnmeyer family quilts.
The Mid-Missouri
Quilts of Valor (QOV), established in September 2009 as an independent
branch of the National QOV Foundation (QOVF.org), honors those touched
by War with Wartime quilts. Their mission is to provide comforting
quilts of appreciation to active duty members and veterans of all
branches of service touched by any war or conflict, thereby thanking
them for their service and unselfish sacrifice to the
United States of
America.
In
2004 twelve members of the Johnmeyer family decided to make quilts as a
family project. Each person
chose colors for her own quilt and then family members made blocks from
these colors to be used in that person’s quilts.
Although the blocks are of similar design the colors and the
arrangement of blocks reflects the individual personalities of the
owners. I ncluded
in the project were sisters, daughters, granddaughters, nieces and
daughter-in-laws. Five of
the quilts have been completed and wereon display at the show.
Two raffle quilts
were on display on the breezeway between the sanctuary and the Parrish
House. Proceeds from the
raffle of the wall hanging “Fayette Courthouse” will go to the Food
Pantry while money derived from the other quilt “Golden Christmas
Memories” will go to the Boonslick Tourism Group for its barn quilts
project.
